Round (Archery)

A certain number of arrows, shot from established distances, in competition. A round is made up of ends, as a baseball game is made up of innings.

Round (Backgammon)

A period in a tournament during which each contestant (except those who received a bye) plays another contestant. For example, each round of an elimination tournament eliminates half the players.


Round (Biblical)

To trim the hair short round about the head [Leviticus 19.27].

One of a series of periods, separated by rests, which make up a boxing bout.

Round (Car Racing)

A round is one complete turn of a wrench. Often used as a unit of measurement when referring to "Wedge" adjustments made to the set-up of a race car. For example, you may hear that a team put "one and a half rounds of wedge in the car". (See Wedge)


Round (Classical Music)

A canon where the melody is sung in two or more voices. After the first voice begins, the next voice starts singing after a couple of measures are played in the preceding voice. All parts repeat continuously.


Round (Coffee)

A balanced coffee whose basic organoleptic characteristics are just at the right level, with none particularly apparent, giving the impression of roundness.

Round (Coin Collecting)

Synonym for a round Pan-Pac commemorative fifty-dollar coin.


Round (Customs)

A cycle of multilateral trade negotiations under the aegis of GATT, culminating in simultaneous trade agreements among participating countries to reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade. Eight "Rounds" have been completed thus far: Geneva, 1947-48; Annecy, France, 1949; Torquay, England, 1950-51; Geneva, 1956; Geneva, 1960-62 (the Dillon Round); Geneva, 1963-67 (the Kennedy Round); Geneva, 1973-79 (the Tokyo Round); and Geneva, 1986-1993 (the "Uruguay Round").
