The amount of salt dissolved in sea water, usually measured in parts per thousand.


Salinity (Physical Geography)

Concentration of dissolved salts found in a sample of water. Measured as the total amount of dissolved salts in parts per thousand. Seawater has an average salinity of about 34 parts per thousand (ppt).


Salinity (Sanitation)

(1) The relative concentration of dissolved salts, usually sodium chloride, in a given water. It is often expressed as mg/L chloride. (2) A measure of the concentration of dissolved mineral substances in water.


Salinity (Science)

Measure of the quantity of total dissolved solids in water.
