Scan (Cancer)

A picture of structures inside the body. Scans often used in diagnosing, staging, and monitoring disease include liver scans, bone scans, and computed tomography (CT) or computerized axial tomography (CAT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. In liver scanning and bone scanning, radioactive substances that are injected into the bloodstream collect in these organs. A scanner that detects the radiation is used to create pictures. In CT scanning, an x-ray machine linked to a computer is used to produce detailed pictures of organs inside the body. MRI scans use a large magnet connected to a computer to create pictures of areas inside the body.

Scan (Car Audio)

When a tuner stops at each programmed station for about five seconds to give the listener a chance to select that station. (e.g., John’s old AM/FM/Cassette player doesn’t even have a scan feature so he has to tune all his stations one at a time.)

Scan (Legal, Mesothelioma)

A study using either x-rays or radioactive isotopes to produce images of internal body organs.

Scan (Networking)

Scan refers to all port, IP or vulnerability scans. Hackers scan ports to find targets. They may use a TCP connect () call, SYN scanning (half-open scanning), Nmap etc.

Scan (Poetry)

To mark off lines of poetry into rhythmic units, or feet, to provide a visual representation of their metrical structure, as illustrated with the following lines from "Verses Supposed to be Written by Alexander Selkirk," by William Cowper (written in anapestic trimeter):

Scan (Scanner)

To examine or capture an image by means of a moving light beam. Scanning technology is used in imaging, optical character recognition, and other areas.

Scan (Supply Chain)

A computer term referring to the action of scanning bar codes or RF tags.

Scan (Technology)

1. In television and computer display technologies, to move an electron beam across the inner surface of the screen, one line at a time, to light the phosphors that create a displayed image. 2. In facsimile and other optical technologies, to move a light-sensitive device across an image-bearing surface such as a page of text, converting the light and dark areas on the surface to binary digits that can be interpreted by a computer.
