Screening (Health Care)

The method by which managed care organizations limit access to health care for unnecessary reasons. In most HMO's, a phone call to the physician or his or her medical office staff is required before an office visit can be arranged. "Gatekeepers" and concurrent review are other methods of screening patients.


Screening (Hepatitis B)

Screening (Microbiology)

To screen a library (see "Library") is to select and isolate individual clones out of the mixture of clones. For example, if you needed a cDNA clone of the pituitary glycoprotein hormone alpha subunit, you would need to make (or buy) a pituitary cDNA library, then screen that library in order to detect and isolate those few bacteria carrying alpha subunit cDNA.
