Seroconversion

For Seroconversion we have terms and definitions in 5 topics. The topics are HIV and AIDs, Hepatitis B, Immunization, Reproductive Infections and Sex.

Seroconversion (HIV and AIDs)

Development of detectable ANTIBODIES to HIV in the blood as a result of infection. It normally takes several weeks to several months for antibodies to the VIRUS to develop after HIV transmission. When antibodies to HIV appear in the blood, a person will test positive in the standard ENZYME-LINKED IMMUNOSORBENT ASSAY (ELISA) test for HIV.

Seroconversion (Hepatitis B)

A change in status from antigen positive/antibody negative to antigen negative/antibody positive. For example, seroconversion of e-antigen positive to e-antibody positive indicates a significant decrease in the amount of hepatitis B virus. Seroconversion of hepatitis B surface antigen positive/surface antibody negative to surface antigen negative/surface antibody positive connotes being "cured" of a chronic HBV infection since the virus has been cleared from the liver and bloodstream.

Seroconversion (Immunization)

Development of antibodies in the blood of an individual who previously did not have detectable antibodies.

Seroconversion (Reproductive Infections)

Development of detectable antibodies to HIV in the blood serum as a result of infection. It may take several months or more after HIV transmission for antibodies to the virus to develop. After antibodies to HIV appear in the blood, a person will test positive in the standard ELISA test for HIV.

Seroconversion (Sex)

The process by which a person develops antibodies.
