Sigmoidoscopy (Colon Cancer)

A diagnostic procedure that uses a flexible viewing tube to allow the doctor to see the inner walls of the colon. During this procedure, a tube is gently passed into the colon through the anus.


Sigmoidoscopy (Colorectal Surgery)

State-of-the-art procedure whereby a lighted scope is placed in the sigmoid colon through the rectum, to provide a view of the organ that aids in the diagnosis of colorectal disorders.


Sigmoidoscopy (Colorectal and Pelvic Floor Diso)

A procedure in which the doctor looks inside the rectum and the lower part of the colon (sigmoid colon) through a lighted tube. The doctor may collect samples of tissue or cells for closer examination. Also called proctosigmoidoscopy.


Sigmoidoscopy (Health)

A diagnostic procedure that allows the physician to examine the inside of a portion of the large intestine, and is helpful in identifying the causes of diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, abnormal growths, and bleeding. A short, flexible, lighted tube, called a sigmoidoscope, is inserted into the intestine through the rectum. The scope blows air into the intestine to inflate it and make viewing the inside easier.
