Spit

For Spit we have terms and definitions in 4 topics. The topics are Geography, Hunting, Physical Geography and Surf.

Spit (Geography)

A long, narrow extension of a beach that extends out into the sea or across an estuary or bay. Spits develop when longshore drift carries sand and/or shingle beyond the end of a beach into open water. The area behind a spit is sheltered from wind and waves and under low energy conditions deposition of sediment can occur. A salt marsh usually develops there, eventually colonised by vegetation (halosere development).

Spit (Hunting)

(1) A long narrow accumulation of sand or shingle, lying generally in line with the COAST, with one end attached to the land the other projecting into the sea or across the mouth of an estuary. See also ness. (2) (SMP) An accretion shoreform which extends seaward from and parallel to the shoreline.

Spit (Physical Geography)

A long and narrow accumulation of sand and/or gravel that projects into a body of ocean water. These features form as the result of the deposition of sediments by longshore drift.

Spit (Surf)

The spray that exits a hollow tube or barrel, which is caused by compression of the air inside the tube, so the air is forced out through the front of the tube.
