Strain (Agriculture)

A subgroup of a species; the descendants of a common ancestor.

Strain (Bone Disorders)

A partial or complete tear of a muscle or tendon.

Strain (Candy Making)

To pass wet ingredients through a sieve to remove lumps or pieces of food.

Strain (Corrosion)

The unit of change in the size or shape of a body due to force. Also known as nominal strain

Strain (Culinary)

To separate to liquid from the solids

Strain (Earthquake)

Small changes in length and volume associated with deformation of the earth by tectonic stresses or by the passage of seismic waves.

Strain (Exercise)

Muscle pull; a stretch, tear or rip of the muscle or adjacent connective tissue, such as fascia or muscle tendon. Usually occurs from an excessive effort.

Strain (Food)

1. To pour a liquid or dry ingredient through a Sieve, Strainer or Cheesecloth to remove undesirable particles. 2. To press soft food through the holes of a sieve, which results in a pureed texture. Food for infants or those on special diets is sometimes processed this way.

Strain (Gardening)

A selection of a variety, cultivar or species which is raised from seed.

Strain (HIV and AIDs)

A population of cells that are descended from one single cell. Can also refer to a virus that has descended from a particular type of a specific virus.

Strain (Hair Loss)

1. An injury to a tendon or muscle resulting from overuse or trauma. 2. A hereditary tendency that originated from a common ancestor. 3. To exert maximum effort. 4. To filter.

Strain (Hepatitis C)

A group or stock of microorganisms made up of descendents of a single isolation in a pure culture.

Strain (Hormone Replacement Therapy)

1. An injury to a tendon or muscle resulting from overuse or trauma. 2. A hereditary tendency that originated from a common ancestor. 3. To exert maximum effort. 4. To filter.

Strain (Immunization)

A specific version of an organism. Many diseases, including HIV/AIDS and hepatitis, have multiple strains.

Strain (Medical)

Muscle damage resulting from excessive stretching or forceful contraction

Strain (Men's Health)

A partial or complete tear of a muscle or tendon.

Strain (Metal)

A measure of the relative change in the size of a body. Linear strain is the change per unit length of a linear dimension. True (or natural) strain is the natural logarithm of the ratio of the length at the moment of observation to the original gauge length. Shearing strain is the change in angle (expressed in radians) between two reference lines originally at right angles. When the term is used alone, it usually refers to linear strain in the direction of the applied stress.A measure of the change in the size or shape of a body, referred to its original size or shape. Linear strain is the change per unit length of a linear dimension. True strain (or natural strain) is the natural logarithm of the ratio of the length at the moment of observation to the original gauge length. Conventional strain is the linear strain referred to the original gauge length. Shearing strain (or shear strain) is the change in angle (expressed in radians) between two lines originally at right angles. When the term strain is used alone it usually refers to the linear strain in the direction of the applied stress.Deformation produced on a body by an outside force.

Strain (Microbiology)

A population of cells all descended from a single cell; also a clone.

Strain (Natural Gas)

The ratio of the elongation to the gauge length of the test specimen, that is, the change per unit of original length. It is expressed as a dimensionless ratio.

Strain (Orthopaedic Surgery)

A partial or complete tear of a muscle or tendon.

Strain (Pests)

A word used to label some pathogens (including insect pathogens) according to their geographical origin. For example, in the last few years a Hong Kong strain and a Beijing strain of human influenza virus have been labelled. Strains of the insect pathogen Beauveria bassiana likewise have been labelled. Strain does not mean the same thing as species.

Strain (Poetry)

A passage or piece of poetry; a flow of eloquence, style, or spirit in expression.

Strain (Roofing)

The percentage of elongation or compression of a material or portion of a material caused by an applied force.

Strain (Textiles)

The change in length per unit length of a material in any given direction.

Strain (Weight Loss)

An injury to the tendon or muscle
