Stratosphere

For Stratosphere we have terms and definitions in 14 topics. The topics are Air Quality, Anthromorphemics, Anthropology, Atmospheric Chemistry, Climate, Energy, Environment, Global Warming, Oceanography, Ozone Protection, Physical Geography, Satellite Meteorology, Science and Weather.

Stratosphere (Air Quality)

The portion of the atmosphere that is 10 to 25 miles above the earth's surface

Stratosphere (Anthromorphemics)

The part of the atmosphere 20 to 50 kilometers (12 to 31 miles) above the earth's surface; the area where ozone forms.

Stratosphere (Anthropology)

The part of the atmosphere 20 to 50 kilometers (12 to 31 miles) above the earth's surface; the area where ozone forms.

Stratosphere (Atmospheric Chemistry)

The thermal atmospheric region of the atmosphere between the troposphere and the mesosphere. The lower boundary of the stratospheric region is marked by the tropopause and begins at approximately 13 kilometers; however, this altitude of the troposphere depends on latitude. The upper limit of the stratosphere is marked by the stratopause at approximately 50 kilometers. The stratosphere is characterized by relatively stable temperatures (between -80 and -50 degrees Celsius) in the lower regions, and begins warming near 20 kilometers, reaching its maximum temperature of approximately 0 degree Celsius at the stratopause. Stratospheric chemistry is of particular interest to scientists because ozone, the principal substance that shields the earth from incoming solar ultraviolet radiation, is found in the stratosphere. It should also be noted that wind currents in the stratosphere are primarily horizontal in nature. [Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences; v50; 3928-38; 1993.] [Nature; v370; 429-34; 1994.]

Stratosphere (Climate)

The region of the upper atmosphere extending from the tropopause (8 to 15 km altitude) to about 50 km. The thermal structure is determined by its radiation balance and is generally very stable with low humidity.

Stratosphere (Energy)

The region of the upper atmosphere extending from the tropopause (8 to 15 kilometers altitude) to about 50 kilometers. Its thermal structure, which is determined by its radiation balance, is generally very stable with low humidity.

Stratosphere (Environment)

The upper portion of the atmosphere (approximately 11 km to 50 km above the surface of the earth).

Stratosphere (Global Warming)

The region of the upper atmosphere extending from the tropopause (8 to 15 kilometers altitude) to about 50 kilometers. Its thermal structure, which is determined by its radiation balance, is generally very stable with low humidity.

Stratosphere (Oceanography)

The second lowest layer of the atmosphere, above the troposphere, starting at about 8km altitude near the poles and about 14km altitude near the Equator, and reaching to about 50km above the surface of the Earth.

Stratosphere (Ozone Protection)

The part of the earth's atmosphere above the troposphere, at about 15 to 60 kilometers (9 to 38 miles). The stratosphere contains the ozone layer.

Stratosphere (Physical Geography)

Atmospheric layer found at an average altitude of 11 to 50 kilometers above the Earth's surface. Within the stratosphere exists the ozone layer. Ozone's absorption of ultraviolet sunlight causes air temperature within the stratosphere to increase with altitude.

Stratosphere (Satellite Meteorology)

The region of the atmosphere above the troposphere and below the mesosphere. It is characterized by a temperature inversion where temperature increases with height.

Stratosphere (Science)

The layer of the atmosphere between roughly 10 and 50 km in which the temperature rises with elevation.

Stratosphere (Weather)

The layer of the atmosphere located between the troposphere and the mesosphere, characterized by a slight temperature increase and absence of clouds. It extends between 11 and 31 miles (17 to 50 kilometers) above the earth's surface. It is the location of the earth's ozone layer.
