Subcommittee

Subcommittee (Advocacy)

A part of a committee that deals with a specific issue within the committee's jurisdiction (such as the veterans" benefits subcommittee of the Veteran's Affairs committee). Most legislation is first developed and voted on at this level, as a full committee will usually not consider legislation until it has passed its subcommittee.

Subcommittee (Congressional)

Subunit of a committee established for the purpose of dividing the committee's workload. Recommendations of a subcommittee must be approved by the full committee before being reported to the Senate.


Subcommittee (Legislative Assembly)

A subordinate committee composed of members appointed by the chair (or by House or Senate leadership) from the full committee. A subcommittee will consider a narrower range of topics than the full committee, and generally is authorized only to make recommendations to the full committee.


Subcommittee (Parliamentary Procedure)

(sous-comité) - A committee of a committee, to which the latter may delegate its powers, except the power to report to the House. Not all committees are granted the power to establish subcommittees.


Subcommittee (Politics)

Smaller, more specialized committees which are organized and operate under the authority standing committees.
