Transition

Transition (Basketball)

  1. The shift from offense to defense.
  2. The movement from offense to defense, or vice versa, when the ball changes hands.


Transition (Bobsledding)

An area of a track where it goes from a straight into a curve.


Transition (Equestrian Sports)

A change of pace or movement.


Transition (Evolution)

A mutation changing one purine into the other purine, or one pyrimidine into the other pyrimidine (i.e., changes from A to G, or vice versa, and changes from C to T, or vice versa).


Transition (Genetics and Genealogy)

A type of base pair, nucleotide mutation involving the replacement of a purine with another purine, or of a pyrimidine with another pyrimidine (e.g., replacing base pair GC with base pair AT). In this example the pyrimidine base C is replaced with the pyrimidine base T in the coding strand. This type of mutation is much more common than a transversion. Compare to Transversion. Transition (Golf)

The change of direction in the swing, from the backswing to the forward swing. (It's very important to make a smooth transition in your swing).

Transition (International Economics)

The process of converting from a centrally planned, non-market economy to a market economy.


Transition (Microbiology)

A nucleotide substitution in which one pyrimidine is replaced by the other pyrimidine, or one purine replaced by the other purine (e.g., A is changed to G, or C is changed to T) (contrast with Transversion) .


Transition (Prostate Cancer)

Change; for example, the transition zone of the prostate is the area of the prostate closest to the urethra and has features that distinguish it from the much larger peripheral zone


Transition (Role Playing Games)

Within GNS theory, changing from one Creative Agenda to another through the course of play. This is distinct from Drift in that it is in principle supported by the rules rather than requiring changing them. The game Scattershot was designed with Transition in mind. The term was coined by Scattershot author Fang Langford.


Transition (Sex)

A short period of intense and very frequent contractions at the end of the first stage of labor that completes dilation of the cervix to 10 cm to allow the infant's head to enter the birth canal.

Transition (Skateboard)

Part of the ramp that takes you from vertical to horizontal.


Transition (Sports, Equestrian)

A change of pace or movement.


Transition (Swimming)

In the Individual Medley event refers to the turn where the swimmer finishes one stroke and begins the next stroke (e.g. the transition from Butterfly to Backstroke) (as opposed to the intermediate turns during each stroke/leg).
