Understory (Ecology)

An understory tree is a tree that can grow underneath taller trees. An understory tree must be able to tolerate shade. American Beech and Flowering Dogwood are good examples of understory trees. They grow very well underneath taller oaks or hickories.

(a) The layer formed by the crowns of smaller trees in a forest. (b) The trees beneath the forest canopy.
