A synthetic type of siding used for its economic value and durability.


Vinyl (Archival)

The word vinyl is imprecisely used to refer to any of a number of plastics, many of which are not appropriate for use in preservation. For specific safe plastics, see Polyester, Polypropylene, Polyvinyl acetate, Acrylic.

Vinyl (Carpet)

Colloquial term for the synthetic polymer, polyvinyl chloride. Also called PVC. PVC is used as a carpet back-coating for carpet tiles and 6' goods. Vinyl foams have been used as attached cushions. Many walk-off mats have solid sheet vinyl backing.

Vinyl (Furniture)

A supple polymer fabric which can be embossed or printed to simulate other materials (wood, leather, silk, etc.). Often has a stretchable knitted elastic backing.


Vinyl (Interior Design)

Fiber made with a manufactured compound polymer


Vinyl (Paint)

A clear, synthetic resin used in some water-based paints, particularly interior flats, and some caulks.

Commonly used synonym for PVC. More accurately, the vinyls are a class of chemical compounds of which PVC is the representative one used in footwear.
