Voltage

For Voltage we have terms and definitions in 15 topics. The topics are Automotive, Batteries, Concert Lighting, Construction, Electric Motors, Electric Power, Energy, Huntingtons Disease, Lighting, Music Technology, Robotics, Roofing, Slot Car Drag Racing, Solar Energy and Wind Energy.

Voltage (Automotive)

Electrical pressure that causes current flow.

Voltage (Batteries)

A unit of measuring electrical pressure, all batteries are rated in volts DC (Direct Current).

Voltage (Concert Lighting)

The electric potential which exists between two components in an electrical system. Lamps are rated in terms of wattage at a specific voltage. Operating a lamp at another voltage from that which it is rated may cause the lamp to burn at less than full intensity or to burn out very quickly.

Voltage (Construction)

A measure of electrical potential. Most homes are wired with 110 and 220 volt lines. The 110 volt power is used for lighting and most of the other circuits. The 220 volt power is usually used for the kitchen range, hot water heater and dryer.

Voltage (Electric Motors)

The force that causes a current to flow in an electrical circuit. Analogous to pressure in hydraulics, voltage is often referred to as electrical pressure. The voltage of a motor is usually determined by the supply to which it is being attached. NEMA requires that the motor be able to carry their rated horsepower at nameplate voltage plus or minus 10% although not necessarily at the rated temperature rise.

Voltage (Electric Power)

The effective (rms) potential difference between any two conductors or between a conductor and ground. Voltages are expressed in nominal values unless otherwise indicated. The nominal voltage of a system or circuit is the value assigned to a system or circuit of a given voltage class for the purpose of convenient designation. The operating voltage of the system may vary above or below this value.

Voltage (Energy)

The difference in electrical potential between any two conductors or between a conductor and ground. It is a measure of the electric energy per electron that electrons can acquire and/or give up as they move between the two conductors.

Voltage (Huntingtons Disease)

A force caused by a difference in electric charge between two areas.

Voltage (Lighting)

A measurement of the pressure of electricity going through a wire.

Voltage (Music Technology)

Voltage is what is known as the "potential difference" between two points, in electronics meaning the two points between which a flow of electrical current can be carried. It is this potential difference that helps to create Electromotive Force (EMF) that can move electrons, or other charge carriers between two points. It's unit of measurement is the Volt (above).

Voltage (Robotics)

A measure of the force that pushes electrons through a circuit. Voltage is often supplied by a battery. A strong current is the result of a high voltage.

Voltage (Roofing)

The driving force behind the flow of electricity somewhat like pressure is in a water pipe.

Voltage (Slot Car Drag Racing)

Commonly, reference to nominal available total voltage provided by track batteries/power supply

Voltage (Solar Energy)

The amount of electromotive force, measured in volts, that exists between two points.

Voltage (Wind Energy)

A measure of electrical potential difference. One volt is the potential difference needed in a circuit to make one Ampere flow, dissipating one Watt of heat.
