Wavelength

For Wavelength we have terms and definitions in 16 topics. The topics are Audio Technology, Cellular, Chemistry, Climatology, Earthquake, Energy, Fiber Optics, Natural Hazards, Noise Control Engineering, Oceanography, Photography, Physical Geography, Robotics, Satellite Meteorology, Science and Solar Physics.

Wavelength (Audio Technology)

The distance between two crests (or valleys) of sound wave pressure. Easy to see graphically (5.2 kb). Usually denoted by the symbol l. Varies from 56 feet for a 20 Hz tone to 0.7 inches for a 20 kHz tone. In general the wavelength in inches is equal to 13,543 divided by the frequency in Hz.

Wavelength (Cellular)

The distance covered by one cycle of a wave.

Wavelength (Chemistry)

On a periodic curve, the length between two consecutive troughs (low points) or peaks (high points).

Wavelength (Climatology)

The distance between two corresponding points of two consecutive waves (e.g., crest to crest or trough to trough).

Wavelength (Earthquake)

The distance between successive points of equal amplitude and phase on a wave (for example, crest to crest or trough to trough).

Wavelength (Energy)

The distance, measured in the direction of progression of a wave, from any given point to the next point in the same phase.

Wavelength (Fiber Optics)

The length of a wave measured from any point on one wave to the corresponding point on the next. The wavelengths of light used in optical fibers are measured in nanometers. Common wavelengths are 850, 1300 and 1350 nm.

Wavelength (Natural Hazards)

The horizontal length of a wave in the direction of motion. An ocean wave is made up of a wave crest and a wave trough The wavelength is the distance between successive points of equal amplitude and phase on a wave (for example, crest to crest, or trough to trough).

Wavelength (Noise Control Engineering)

For a periodic wave in an isotropic medium, perpendicular distance between two wavefronts in which the displacements have a difference in phase of one complete period. Unit, meter (m).

Wavelength (Oceanography)

The distance between two wave crests or wave troughs.

Wavelength (Photography)

Describes the distance from wave-crest to wave-crest between two corresponding waves of light in the electro-magnetic spectrum. Wavelength are measured in nanometers (nm) and Angstrom units (A).

Wavelength (Physical Geography)

Distance between two successive wave crests or troughs.

Wavelength (Robotics)

In a wave that repeats itself, the wavelength is the distance between identical parts of the wave. Click the blackboard in the waves lab for a drawing showing wavelength.

Wavelength (Satellite Meteorology)

The distance between one crest of a wave and another.

Wavelength (Science)

The distance between two energy peaks of adjacent energy waves; light is energy radiating within a particular range of wavelengths

Wavelength (Solar Physics)

The distance from crest to crest or trough to trough of an electromagnetic wave (see electromagnetic radiation) or other wave.
