Worm (Computer Technology)

An infestation designed to copy itself repeatedly to memory, on drive space, or on a network until little memory or disk space remains.

Worm (Dairy Production)

(see Helminth).

Worm (Digital Imaging)

An acronym for Write Once Read Many applied to a type of optical discs or CD ROM.

Worm (E-Learning)

A computer virus that replicates itself many times over for the purpose of consuming system resources, eventually shutting down a computer or server. This type of virus is most often directed at mail servers such as Microsoft Exchange and is usually unleashed when an unsuspecting user opens an email attachment.

Worm (Etymology)

From the Old English "wyrm," meaning "dragon."

Worm (Information Security)

A worm is a program that spreads over network. Unlike a virus, worm does not attach itself to a host program.

Worm (Internet)

A worm is a virus that does not infect other programs. It makes copies of itself, and infects additional computers (typically by making use of network connections) but does not attach itself to additional programs; however a worm might alter, install, or destroy files and programs.

Worm (Photography)

Write Once Read Many. Most common to optical disks. Worm refers to data storage that cannot be change once written. However, it may be read as many times as desired.

Worm (Security Testing)

Independent program that replicates from machine to machine across network connections often clogging networks and information systems as it spreads.
(I) A computer program that can run independently, can propagate a complete working version of itself onto other hosts on a network, and may consume computer resources destructively. (See: Morris Worm, virus.)

Worm (Storage Media)

Write-Once, Read Many. Optical drive that stores data to a removable disk cartridge such that the data cannot be written over once it has been stored. Requires special software to handle.

Worm (Technology)

A computer program that replicates itself and is self-propagating. Whereas viruses are designed to cause problems on a local system and are passed through boot sectors of disks and through files, worms are designed to thrive in network environments. Network worms were first defined by Shoch & Hupp of Xerox in ACM Communications (March 1982). A famous (or infamous) worm was the Internet Worm of November 1988. It successfully propagated itself on over 6,000 systems across the Internet.

Worm (William Shakespeare)

A serpent.
