Yama (Classic Yoga)

"restrain" (to hold back) or "control" (to regulate); a moral injunction, or self-restraint. The first of the eight stages of Patanjali's ashtanga yoga system. Yama can also be a road or a path: it restrains one from wandering or getting lost.As a proper noun, Yama is the God of Death or the God of the Underworld (identified as Pluto by the Greeks; no relation to Satan). As Death, the word is literal: Yama is the ultimate restraint.Yama also refers to the planet Saturn, whose orbit is the slowest (or most restrained) of all the naked-eye planets.


Yama (Hinduism)

God of Death; ruler of the realm of the dead the 'Land of the Fathers': he was the first man to die and therefore the welcomer of others to his realm
