Color Separation (Advertising)

A traditional photographic process that uses four film negatives to ultimately create a full-color printed product. Recent computer innovations have obviated the need for separated film negatives in certain applications.


Color Separation (Cartographic)

Process of preparing a separate drawing, engraving, or negative for each color required in the printing production of a map or chart.


Color Separation (Digital Photography)

The process of splitting full-color artwork into its CMYK components; one or all four of the separate pieces of film from which a four-color version will be printed.


Color Separation (Graphic Design)

the process of creating separate negatives and plates for each color of ink (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) that will be used in the publication.


Color Separation (Image Editing)

The act of converting an RGB color image into CMYK color image. The act of color separation is a technical function during which critical press specific settings such as GCR, black ink limit and total ink limit are applied to the image. If an image is already CMYK it would be described as being already color separated and would not need to be separated again.


Color Separation (Non-Profit Marketing)

The separation of a multi-color ad into four screens for printing; yellow, cyan, magenta, and black.


Color Separation (Paper)

The method used in breaking down the primary colors needed to prepare plates for printing color work.

Color Separation (Scanner)

Output or electronic files that contain image information for only one printing ink.The division of an image into its component colors for printing. Each color separation is a piece of negative or positive film.

Color Separation (Technology)

1. The process of printing the colors in a document as separate output files, each of which is to be printed using a different-colored ink. There are two types of color separation: spot color separation and process color separation. See also color model, process color, spot color. 2. One of the output files produced by a color document, to be printed in its own color of ink.
