The outline or external boundary of a form.

Contour (Cartographic)

Imaginary line on ground, all points of which are at the same elevation above or below a specific datum.


Contour (Fine Art)

The outer edge of forms which implies three dimensions, in contrast to an outline, which is a boundary of two-dimensional, flat form. Also, a type of line drawing which captures this three-dimensional outer edge, with its fullness and recession of form.

Contour (Hunting)

A line drawn on a map connecting points of the same elevation.

Contour (Sanitation)

A line of equal elevation above a specified datum, usually mean sea level.


Contour (Sculptural)

A line that creates a boundary separating an area of space or object from the space around it.


Contour (Surf)


A line on a map or chart representing points of equal value compared to datum or starting point. An isobath is a line connecting points of equal depth below a datum to measure bathymetry, and an isobar when used to represent atmospheric pressure.

Contour (Television)

An intentionally non-uniform frequency response, used for such purposes as reducing audible noise by boosting signal frequencies (usually the higher audio frequencies) prior to entering a stage (e.g. analog tape recording) that tends to have noise at such frequencies.
