Crossover (Audio Technology)

An electronic network for dividing sound into high and low frequencies for reproduction by woofers, tweeters, etc. A crossover for a two-way system would consist of a high-pass filter that sends the high frequencies to the tweeter, and a low-pass filter that sends the low frequencies to the woofer. For a three-way system a band-pass filter is added to send the middle frequencies to the midrange speaker. The response beyond the crossover frequency is reduced by an amount that depends on the order of the crossover filters. A 1st order filter reduces the response 6 dB per octave, a 2nd order 12 dB per octave, a 3rd order 18 dB per octave, and a 4th order 24 dB per octave. Crossover design is discussed in the section on sound system design.

Crossover (Backgammon)

The movement of a checker from one quadrant of the board to an adjacent quadrant.

Crossover (Cinematography)

The frequency at which a signal is split in order to feed separate parts of a loudspeaker system. (Sound)

Crossover (Comic Books)

A story where one character appears prominently in the story of another character (also called "x-over").

Crossover (Entertainment Industry)

A song which receives airplay in more than one market.

Crossover (Figure Skating)

A method of turning corners and gaining speed on which the skater crosses one foot over the other.

Crossover (Film Production)

The frequency at which a signal is split in order to feed separate parts of a loudspeaker system. (Sound)

Crossover (HIV and AIDs)

A clinical trial in which the experimental and control groups switch treatments.

Crossover (Home Audio)

An electronic circuit device, used most commonly in loudspeaker systems, that divides an input sound spectrum into higher and lower bands about a specified frequency. Crossovers can either be passive or active. They are also found in many home theatre and cinema sound processors and are used to direct low frequency sounds to the subwoofer.

Crossover (Home Theater)

A component that divides an audio signal into two or more ranges by frequency, sending, for example, low frequencies to one output and high frequencies to another. An active crossover is powered and divides the line-level audio signal prior to amplification. A passive crossover uses no external power supply and may be used either at line level or, more commonly, at speaker level to divide the signal after amplification and send the low frequencies to the woofer and the high frequencies to the tweeter.

Crossover (Ice Hockey)

The crossover is a skating technique is which one skate is placed in front of the skate on the opposite leg. It can be done while skating forward or backward. Crossovers are used to maneuver in the corner or to accelerate on an open portion of the rink.

Crossover (Publishing)

When a graphic carries over multiple pages.

Crossover (Roller Coaster)

Where two parts of the same coaster's track cross over one another.

Crossover (Securities)

The point at which the partnership goes from showing losses for tax purposes to showing income.

Crossover (Speed Skating)

1) Halfway through each lap in pairs skating, the skaters have to change lanes in a designated area called the crossover. 2) The motion used by skaters to negotiate curves, in which the outer foot crosses over the inner foot to help maintain balance and speed.

Crossover (Sports Collectibles)

PSA will review cards, graded by other grading services, for crossover. PSA graders will evaluate your card inside the current holder. If they deem that the card is worthy to cross over into the equivalent PSA grade or specified grade on the PSA submission form (for instance, you may choose to have the card crossed into a lower grade), then the card will be cracked out of the current holder and placed into a PSA holder.

Crossover (Tap Dance)

Same as a Front Irish. A movement employing a crossing of one foot in front of the other.
